Rev. Matthew Sergent (friends call him “Matt”) began his ministry with Andrew Chapel UMC in July 2018. Matt previously served as the Associate Pastor of Galilee UMC in Sterling for 11 years. His primary ministry focus was leading Galilee’s second campus ministry, the worshiping and serving community of The Chapel at Lansdowne Woods, a gated community for adults 55 and older in Leesburg.
Ministry was not Matt’s first career. He was in law enforcement for twenty years, taking an early retirement from The City of Falls Church as a Police Captain to answer the call to ministry. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Towson University, Certification of Police Principals at The Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy and a Master of Divinity degree at Wesley Theological Seminary.
Matt and his wife Barbara have been married for thirty years. Barbara is a Radiology Technologist and the Office Manager for Fairfax Radiology Centers in Sterling. They have two children: Erica, who attends James Madison University and majors in Justice Studies and Philosophy, and Emily, who attends Virginia Tech and is majoring in Animal and Poultry Science. They also have two small, lovable dogs, Pixie and Buddy. In Matt’s free time he enjoys taking trips with his family to the beach or the mountains. His favorite hobbies include nature hikes, fishing, golfing and photography.
