Liturgist Instructions Updated Summer 2012
--Church begins at 11:00 (Summer worship begins 10:00 with announcements given by the Lay Leader (Liturgist will substitute if Lay Leader is unavailable) followed by pastoral concerns. Arrive about 15 minutes early to meet with the Pastor for that day's participation instructions. You may email the church secretary to request a copy of the bulletin if you would like to review the readings before Sunday.
-- Liturgists will enter the sanctuary with the minister, walking up the center aisle and sitting with him near the organ behind the lectern in a chair facing the courtyard. After pastoral concerns, the service will begin with the Prelude by the organist. Except for summer worship, the choir will follow with an Introit.
-- There will typically be two scripture readings, one read by you and one by the Pastor. If you read from the Gospels, please ask the congregation to stand during the reading. Following any reading, please bless the reading. You may say something like, "The word of God for the people of God." The congregation will reply, "Thanks be to God."
-- The organist prefers the hymns announced prior to singing so she can prepare, so please ask the congregation to stand and announce the hymn number and name.
-- During the last hymn, join the Pastor near the middle of the altar and walk to the back of the sanctuary. After the Benediction, please join the Pastor in the Narthex and greet each member as they leave the sanctuary.
-- Liturgists help serve communion the first Sunday of each month, and designated special services, by offering the juice. Intinction will be the most common method. If you feel comfortable, you may say something like "the blood of Christ poured out for you" as you offer the cup to each person. You will be offered communion with the Acolyte and the organist before the congregation. After serving everyone, you will offer communion to the minister.
-- If you are unable to serve on a day you are scheduled, please find a substitute from the Liturgist list below. And an email to the office and the minister to notify them of changes, preferably before Thursday so the change can be listed in the bulletin.
Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions not mentioned.
Thank you for your service in ministry and God Bless each of you,
Laura Bumpus
