Our Mission Garden Goes In!

On May 31st over 60 volunteers help create the Andrew Chapel Mission Garden as Steve Montgomery’s Eagle Project.  The garden was designed by Steve and his garden advisor extraordinaire, Katy Page as part of Andrew Chapel’s adult and youth fellowship and mission program this summer.

We are looking for 14 tomato cages.  If you have some that are not being used, we would be happy to put them to good use in the Mission Garden.

The Mission Garden has been sponsored by the Adult and Children’s Council.

The garden was built on Saturday morning and planted with 8 rows of corn, 6 rows of tomatoes, 4 rows of beans, plus peppers, squash, zucchini, and cucumbers.

A deer fence was installed and mulch was place around the edges to provide some protection from the lawn service.

Watering will be made easier with laying soaker hoses in the garden.

In addition, sod was cut from the garden area and transplanted on the back side hill for erosion control. The Bell Tower gardens were mulched too.

The project started at 8am and finished at 12:52am with the largest clap of lightening and the automatic watering system turned on in full.

Head Gardener Katy Page was very pleased with the quality of the ground and the garden.

It was a fun time for all that participated and we look forward to the many benefits to come this summer and fall.

The 3rd and 4th Grade Sunday School Class have created a scarecrow that looks a lot like their teacher Spencer Copland to keep an eye on the garden when the rest of us are at work or sleeping.
Please contact the church office or Katy Page if you would like to schedule some family or fellowship time over the summer to maintain the garden and help with the harvest.  We want to harvest the crop for sale in August/September with proceeds going to Food for Others and mission support.  All unsold vegetables will be donated to Food for Others.  In the fall clean up, we will use the leaves to build up a mulch pile for the next summer planting.  The September Pot Luck’s theme will be harvesting the garden and followed by a campout at the church for interested participants.

Just as a reminder, the garden is enclosed and the gate for the deer fence needs to be tied tight if some one enters the garden.  We have several deer and rabbits that visit the grounds each night.

We want a fall harvest not fat deer as the outcome of the garden.
