Evangelsim and Mission Teams

EMTs Serve Andrew Chapel and our Community

The Andrew Chapel junior and senior high youth have organized into Evangelism and Mission Teams (EMTs).  The EMT's serve on the 2nd Sunday of each month during the school year and perform a variety of ministries.

They travel to Rising Hope UMC to serve lunch to their congregation following worship; visit the elderly and disabled at Wesley Housing's Coppermine Apartments, and assemble snack bags and activity bags for underprivileged children served by the Embry Rucker Shelter and FACETS program.

The youth also work at Andrew Chapel to bake cookies for college students, prisoners and the elderly, pack clothes for Honduras, help with building maintenance and other "as needed" tasks.

Two of the youth's favorite assignments are "Answering God's Call" - a surprise "mission", such as raking leaves and planting spring bulbs or sending packages to our military personnel; and "Hearts, Hammers and Helping Hands" which includes various construction projects.

The Evangelism portion of the EMT's is two-fold -- not only do the youth work to spread the Good News of Christ's love to our community, but each of the youth also invites a friend to work with them on the various ministry projects.

Rising Hope UMC

What:   Making meal ahead of time, traveling to/from Rising Hope, preparing  and serving lunch and clean-up.

Suggest dividing meal into sections and having each youth take one or two components (e.g. crockpot of chili and pan of cornbread).  Alternatively, you could get together on Saturday to cook together, but this may be difficult because of youth’s schedules.  You could also meet at church early on Sunday morning to assemble the casseroles and salads, if you prefer (but would still need to shop for ingredients ahead of time).

All receipts should be turned in for reimbursement  (or at least let us know how much you spent so that we can acknowledge the donation)

Baking & Bags

What:  Baking cookies and/or brownies and assembling snack bags for Embry Rucker shelter and the FACETS program for homeless people in Fairfax County.

Bags for Embry Rucker – 150 Snack Bags for after-school program for homeless children

Bags for FACETS – 20 -30 Snack Bags for children of their clients

15 – 20 Activity bags for children of various ages

(to keep children occupied while parents meet with social worker)

Food for Others

What:  Delivery of food to homeless/poor people.   Food for Others serves a large number of needy people throughout Fairfax County.  Andrew Chapel helps with deliveries in our area Monday nights – either the Monday before or after the EMT Sunday.  Meet at the church at 4:30PM on the assigned evening and travel together to Food For Others.  Pick up food and make deliveries.  Usually takes about 2 hours (or a bit longer)

Wesley Housing Corporation – Coppermine Apartments

What:   Service to elderly and disabled residents of Coppermine Apartments in Wesley Housing (United Methodist nursing homes and apartment buildings). Sunday afternoon.  Leave Andrew Chapel at 1PM and arrive at Coppermine around 1:00pm.  Leave Coppermine at 4:30pm in order to be back at Andrew Chapel for choir at 5pm. Options include a variety of service projects, such as doing chores for the residents (washing floors, dusting, etc);  reading or writing letters for them; working on craft projects; singing hymns or doing a skit.

Answering God’s Call

What:  Miscellaneous (and hopefully fun!) tasks based on Scripture verses.  Youth should be told the Scripture verse, and what they need to wear/bring, but not the specific task – let them guess! Service to members of Andrew Chapel and others who have need of our help on Sunday afternoons – 1pm to 5pm
